Zero Waste Christmas
As we know Christmas is a great time to
be with your family, but it is also the worst period for the environment.
Each year, this is the worst period
for food waste. According to Commercialwaste, during
those family parties, all over the country (in UK), we buy almost:
370 million mince pies
250 million pints of lager and
beer
35 million bottles of wine
It is 80% more food than
the rest of the year. Worse, during this period, we put in waste bins 230,000
tons of food. It is the equivalent of 2 million turkeys.
Each year we also have this
tradition of wrapping gifts with beautiful wrapping paper. But do you know
that if we put every single piece of paper together this year we would have
enough to wrap around the New Jersey Island. It is 227 000 miles of
packaging that we will throw to the garbage this year.
There are many solutions to
our problem, there they are:
If you want to use an
eco-friendly solution for wrapping paper, you can use cloths to wrap the gifts.
Somebody says this is the elves stole them to make the package,
this is a great story for your kids!
You can also use school
papers, drawings or old scores to wrap gifts. If you want to do something
original you can decorate them, paint them of draw on them. This is a great
activity to do with kids or friends.
If you don’t know what you
can give to your friend, your family or if you’re searching for
ideas, you can go take a look to zero waste product.
